It is cool to care for nature

Water

All forms of life need water and the first thing I did was making a wildlife pond with nicely sloping edges and 1.20 deep in the centre. The hole was dug with the help of a JCB, it is lined with sand and carpet to protect the rather expensive butyl liner. Plants were grown in baskets and masses of oxygenating plants like milfoil and star wort were added to keep the water clean.
Within a year of its construction it looked very natural and within 4 years I had to take measures to stop it getting too choked up!

It was amazing to see how quickly wildlife found the pond; moorhens, ducks, frogs, toads and newts found there way withing a few months and I have seen as many as 26 ducks on it, not too good as they do a lot of damage with their rootling.

I was very please to see so much frog and toad spawn and know that the survivors will come back to breed when they are about 4 years old. Do you know that a toad or frog never stops growing? A large toad is an old toad!
